The Forestry Commission describes the wood as upland ash woodland, of previous ancient woodland status. Mainly populated by planted conifers, Norway spruce and Sitka spruce, native broadleaves are here in large and varied abundance. Birch, oak, sycamore, beech, willow, elm, hazel, hornbeam, and, last but not least, the previously mentioned ash.

It almost goes without saying that there is a very large variety of wildlife ensconced and resident within the woods. Roe deer, badgers and fox favour the forest, which is a vitally precious reserve for the endangered red squirrel, whilst the river is patrolled by otter, kingfisher and dipper.

The wood features access to the banks of the river, and as the sporting rights are owned, no permission or licence is required to fish.

A rustic bench has been installed to encourage taking time out, to rest and relax in nature's embrace.

Access off the highway is provided by a well-made historic track which runs through the centre of the wood.

From the ridestop entrance, another track continues up the bank to the level areas above. Although initially traversable by regular vehicle, after the hairpin it is 4x4 only.

An additional small hardstanding has also been provided to the river frontage side of the track.

Sporting rights: These are owned and included in the sale. The wood has river frontage along Slitrig Water which has stocks of Brown Trout and Salmon.

As is the case for all our woodlands, the purchaser will be asked to enter into a covenant which serves to protect the peace and quiet of the woodland.

An ideal escape from the pressures of modern life, the wood offers many opportunities to observe the comings and goings in the natural environment. A spot of fishing or camping by the riverside would be an excellent choice of weekend pastime.

The large amount of growing timber could be sustainably harvested as a domestic wood fuel source, this would also encourage a greater diversity of trees and flora to flourish in the space and light created.

Steeped in history this area was home to marauding reivers who passed by on raids across the border.

Behind the wood lies the historic Stobs Military Camp. For nearly 60 years, thousands of young men used the facilities at Stobs Camp near Hawick in the Scottish Borders to train for war. Now the sometimes bleak, windswept hills lie as silent witnesses to all that passed before them.

The Waverley Line once ran from Edinburgh, all the way down to Carlisle, with Stobs Castle a stop on this line.
