Description
Noils Wood is located on the fringe of a larger woodland, which was newly created about 15 years ago. Located high above the Tweed Valley, it is quiet and peaceful, with superb views across to the Cardrona Forest and northwards in the direction of Peebles.
Gently sloping to the south, the wood also features useful level areas throughout. These areas are generally open and would lend themselves readily to hut siting and further planting. A large stand of young oak lies along the southern edge, slowly giving way to a more open grassy area and mixed native broadleaf to the north.
Despite its relative youth as a woodland, the slow process of native woodland flower species establishment has already started. This will accelerate with time as the seasons pass and the trees shed leaves and fallen dead wood rots down.
Panoramic views open up towards the western boundary, which overlooks the valley towards Cardrona and Peebles beyond.
There is a growing interest in hut, bothy and temporary shelter building, especially in Scotland; for those interested in erecting a hut or shelter, here is some interesting and very helpful guidance from Reforesting Scotland’s Thousand Hut Campaign. Your Local Planning Authority should also be consulted.
Trees
A large stand of young oak is the first view of the wood from the main entrance. These could easily be thinned as time goes by, which could supply a small source of firewood and also open up the canopy for other species to become established.
A section of ash is showing signs of Ash Dieback disease, which has affected a majority of ash trees in the UK. Early estimates of survivability and resistance have improved, and the current advice is to leave affected trees to see how they fare. Indeed, a good many of the remaining trees appear to be flourishing. There is no requirement to remove dead timber or affected trees.
Scattered throughout the wood and towards the east can be found hazel, alder, hawthorn and rowan.
Wildlife
Pathways throughout the grassy undergrowth indicate the nighttime foraging activity of badgers and foxes, with poke holes in grassy tussocks indicating the homes of shrews and voles.
Soaring buzzards frequent the wide-open skies, ever watchful for a free meal below. Jays and magpies squawk from the tree cover, adding to the harsh bark of male roe deer.
Features
The wood features a good hardstanding and turning area. A great spot to season out a domestic wood fuel supply. It would also make an ideal base point for an overnight camping trip; the night skies here are truly wonderful.
A rustic bench is an ideal spot to rest a wee while and take in the unrivalled views.
Access, tracks and footpaths
Access to the woodland is off the A72 and then via a series of well made forest tracks leading through a gated entrance to the internal stone woodland tracks.

The sporting rights are owned and included in the sale.

Local area and history
Innerleithen was formerly a centre for textile manufacturing. In the textile industry, the noils are short fibres that the gilling process removes. The Tweed Valley in Tweeddale in the Scottish Borders is known the world over for the dramatic beauty of its landscape. Walkers will find the Southern Upland Way just a mile or so to the south; anglers can explore the River Tweed with its salmon fishing flowing in the valley bottom while mountain bikers come to two of the best biking centres in the UK, Innerleithen and Glentress. For a sense of history, a quick look at the OS map shows many ancient monuments, hill forts, settlements and cairns. For more recent history, Traquair is claimed to be Scotland's oldest inhabited house, whilst the nearby St Ronan's Well is a Victorian spa visited by many.

Conventional directions:
- From Innerleithen take the A72 towards Peebles. After about 1 mile pass Caerleebank livery on the right.
- Pass a red warning sign; "Farm traffic" and take the farm track to the right immediately before a row of white cottages at 90° to the road.
- From Peebles take the A72 towards Innerleithen for about 3½ miles passing the McDonalds Cardrona hotel on the right.
- After a further 1½ miles pass the entrance to Glenormiston farm which has a white gatehouse with ornate wrought iron gates.
- Pass a red warning sign: "Farm traffic" and take the farm track to the left immediately after a row of white cottages at 90° to the road.
- Follow the track up the hill turning right at the T junction. Continue through the trees, the track bends sharp left passing a gateway to a timber stable on the right. The road continues to rise passing through a stand of birch trees.
- Please park in front of the small quarry on the right, the main entrance is evident, to the right of the track.
- Walk through the stile next to the gate and continue up the hill for about 230m to the well marked entrance on the left.
